“There was a power outage at a department store yesterday. Twenty people were trapped on the escalators.”

On Thursday, Scott and I were in the Wal-Mart parking lot, and at the exact moment Scott shut his car door, all the lights in the city went out. He shut his door again later, hoping that all the lights would come back on, but no such luck.

We did our shopping in the dark (because we are American, and nothing can stop us from spending money) and I heard a girl in the line next to us say: "Seriously you guys, this is like the second coming." I think it's good she doesn't live in a third world country, or she would always think Christ was about to descend.

The temple was out too, but you could still see the generator lights on. We drove up there since it sits on a hill and saw that all of Rexburg AND the surrounding cities were dark.

We wanted badly to use our 72 hour kit in our car but decided against eating the granola bars and chicken noodle soup. The flashlights came in handy, though.

In the end, we hung out with Amber and Lucas and kept forgetting that we couldn't use a bunch of stuff because it was run by electricity. And all of my decorative candles now have black wicks. The power came on again at around 11pm. Just in time to not need it anymore.

And I know you were worried, but all of our food is fine.

I found this in the article "Power Outage puts 29,000 in the Dark" from the local newspaper:

"Because there were other emergencies in the area Thursday night there was some confusion about the cause of the outage. Oler says reports of any connection between the cause of the outage and either an explosion and fire in Terreton or some kind of transformer incident in Rigby."

TRANSFORMER incident?! COOL! I'm picturing something like this:

  1. Go figure! We leave and things start to get interesting. Isn't that the way it always works? ;)
